How to correctly clean a pitbike\ Mini bike \ or basically any carb

For this "how to" im going to be using a mukini carb that im going to remove from a pitpro 140cc

  • Symptoms of a dirty carburetor

The reason im cleaning my carb is because of a flat spot at full throttle that has become extremly anoying. Sometimes this can be cause from having a dirty spark plug but as i have already cleaned that and the symptoms are still occuring its obviously due to the main jet having a blockage,

  • Step one

Make Sure fuel is turned off and undo the bolts holding the carb on the manifold. Also undo the screw holding the carbie on the carburetor and remove the airfilter

  • Step 2

Disconnect the hose's from the carburetor as shown below.

  • Step 3

You should now be able to remove the carburator from the motors manifold . Now all you have to do is unscrew the top part of the carbie that holds the needle and slide and slide it out. The carbie should now be completly removed from the bike

  • Step 4

Now what you will have to do is turn the carbie upside down and undo all the screw holding the bottom part of the carbie together.

  • Step 5

Now you should have something that looks like this. I have labelled the jets. the main jet controlls WOP (wide open throttle) Which is obviously the part of the carbie causing my flat spot so lets take it out with a flat head screw driver and have a look.

  • Step 6

You can only just see but there is all this white Gunk stuck to it blocking it pretty dam good. To clean the jet give it a clean in a bucket of petrol and clean all the gunk of it. To clean the small pin like size hole through the middle of the jet an Air compressor is the easiest way to do this.

  • Step 7

Now clean the bottom of the bowl and remove all the dirt and built up gunk from within there. Now we can put the bottom of the bowl back on and screw it on tightly . There is a rubber gasket between the bottom of the bowl and the carbie which can sometimes be hard to get back on and fit right but with some fidling around its usually pretty easy . Its a good idea at this stage to give the carb a good clean and get all the diry and everything of it so it looks shiny and clean

  • Step 8

Now we can put the carburator back on the bike. Just follow the first 3 steps in reverse.

  • The Test Ride...

After cleaning the main jet the bike was running perfectly with no flat spots at all. I would recomend completly removing the carbie and giving it a good clean atleast after every 10 big rides as it does keep dirt and gunk out of the engine and prolongs the engine life.
